Today Room 3 and 17 joined the older Enviro team members to do a rubbish pick up at Petone Beach. We joined Ben from Sustainable Coastlines to do the rubbish audit.
We were Civilian Scientists for the morning!
First we had to measure out the survey area. 100 metres long and 10metres each side of the high tide line.
And then we started picking up rubbish
Petone beach is a beautiful spot but it was a bit chilly today!
Johnsonville school civilian scientists!
When we got back to school we had to sort, weigh and load in all our rubbish data.
Once we sorted everything, then we counted how many there were of each kind of rubbish,
Then we had to weigh it all and load all our rubbish information.
Petone rubbish audit complete!

Project Jonah!
Today we had Mina from Project Jonah come and talk to the Enviro group about Project Jonah.
We found out about all the different dolphins and whales.
This is how big a hump back whale can get.
And this how big a blue whale can get. Their heart is as big as a small car!
We learnt what we could do to help.
Mina showed us what happens to plastic bags in the sea so we all need to do what we can to stop using plastic and making sure we stop rubbish ending up in the sea.
We learnt what do you do if you find a stranded whale.
First you ring someone.
Then you keep then wet, pour water on them, cover them with wet material, but make sure no water goes down the blow hole, and don't move them.
We gave Mina the money from our Sea creatures dress up day for Project Jonah.
Thanks Mina for coming and chatting to us. We were very pleased to support Project Jonah.
